Nikolai Lukin
Dissecting reality like a universal scalpel, Nikolai Lukin masterfully uses a variety of media, adapting them to the tasks he sets himself. Removing himself from the “unbearable lightness of being” of bright Odessa seaside life, he turns to practical philosophy. His art is a way to measure the depth of tragedy, to outline the dramas of everyday life and to lead the viewer, like Virgil, through the circles of familiar hell, on the shadow side of the sunny resort - an artificial paradise.
Possessing skill and a rich color palette, Lukin consciously limits his pictorial possibilities, posing complex stylistic challenges. His works balance on the edge of minimalism and grisaille. Outward restraint hides despair, excitement and sadness, which literally pulsate on the surface.
Lukin's canvases are permeated with lively emotionality - pictorial passion does not fit within the framework. It bursts beyond the limits, explodes the usual media and leaves scars on the canvas, like the marks of the experience. His art is both a drama and a conceptual study, where every detail is subordinated to the general idea, and the visual form becomes a metaphor for human existence.
